I hate the slow, sticky feeling of
realizing you’re started to loathe someone
you once found magnetic.

Echo once filled me with glee,
he reverberated in my bones
like a chord struck forte.

Everything I wanted to hear,
thrown back at me with almost
as much gusto
as when the words
left my lips like the fucking tarmac.

Now he mocks me.
A kept parrot who
I keep having the throw a blanket
over his cage to simulate nightfall.

I catch Reflection’s eyes
and they quickly roll away.
Like a dog who dares not make eye contact for
too long,

lest we engage in some for of intimidation tactic.
Reflection knows exactly how
I feel
about Echo.

Reflection saw this all coming from
a
mile away.

That’s what he does. He absorbs all, not even light can escape his pull.

Reflection may seem stubborn and judgmental at times,
but I’ve come to learn he is truly unbiased.
He serves no gods,
no kings,
no person.
I still think he’s a fickle prick though.

And while this cyclical trio rolls on,
Shadow just lays there.
He appears to be mimicking my every move in the light,
but that’s not it.

He knows the present
like I know he’ll be there in the sun.
He knows me inside and out,
and dances my dance

as he has done so since light
first hit my face.

If light can be both a a wave and a particle,
two things can be true.

Shadow is both my future and my past.
Knowing my actions,
and yet always being
one
step
behind.

Mother, maiden, crone.
Echo, reflection, shadow.
And there I am,
at centre stage.
The magic that brings them all together
on a Friday night at the bar.
Sharing their gift of the gab,
and bonding
over
how much they love me unconditionally.
That they’ll always be with me,

until that paradox that is
light leaves me behind.
